The Ecstatic Cut
The Vorpal Blades is the designation for an elite assault cadre of the Black Legion, primarily operating alongside the Scions of Seleenar warband. This formation’s approach contrasts with that of daemon-bound elites or berserker cults; instead, they employ disciplined, methodical engagement focused on delivering decisive, singular strikes with warp-saturated edged weaponry known as the ecstatic cut.
The Vorpal Blades stand apart from their genetic brethren. Rather than prolonged, spectacular conflicts, their impact on the battlefield is defined by sudden, overwhelming force, typically applied directly against enemy command structures. This distinct approach to warfare makes them a reliable and effective spear-tip assault force for the Sons of Seleenar, who specialize in void combat.

Edge of the Warp
Auspex records and recovered fragments confirm the Vorpal Blades wield modified power sabres. These weapons have been subjected to controlled immaterial saturation, theorized to be the result of ritually broken blades bathed in raw warp energy, which imbues the metal with the properties of the aether. Crucially, these armaments do not display the possession signatures typical of daemon-bound weaponry. Extensive analysis of recovered blade remnants has failed to detect any bound entities or confirm the presence of symbiotic warp intelligences.
Instead, the weapons appear to function as phase-disruptive conduits. During combat, the blade edge demonstrates measurable oscillation across a narrow immaterial gradient, producing transient desynchronisation between matter and its localised spatial constant. It is therefore uncertain whether claiming an enemy champion’s blade, and then ritually breaking it, is a prerequisite for gaining membership to this fraternity.
These weapons inflict wounds that defy standard trauma expectations. The effect on armour is peculiar: separation occurs without any visible distortion. Flesh is cut with an unnerving, improbable precision. Furthermore, in multiple cases, tissue at the point of incision has been observed as partially missing rather than merely severed or displaced. This suggests the wound causes a momentary ontological displacement of material, not just a simple physical cut.
Cutting the faultline
Analysis of helm-capture fragments and the interrogation of captured cult intermediaries reveal the Vorpal Blades’ singular martial goal: the “Ecstatic Cut.” Fragmentary vox records describe this as a strike delivered by identifying and exploiting a momentary fault line in local reality. This technique requires disciplined physical alignment combined with heightened warp-sensitivity – to slice along the fault line or reality.
A Vorpal Blade’s engagement is typically preceded by a brief, notable period of stillness just before the strike. This interval is marked by a slight, recorded increase in immaterial flux around the weapon. Observations confirm the action is non-ritualistic, showing no overt invocation, chanting, or theatrical or devotional posturing. The ensuing attack is almost invariably a singular strike, with follow-up strikes being rare.
Targets eliminated through this method have included heavily armoured Astartes, void-shield projectors, and structural load-bearing elements of fortified installations. In each case, the point of impact corresponds not necessarily to anatomical weakness or structural vulnerability, but to a locus of convergence — a line along which stress, energy, or command authority is concentrated.
Iskard Lustvyper Preceptor of the Vorpal Blades
Iskard Lustvyper, formerly a duellist in the Palatine Blades, deserted the Emperor’s Children when their quest for sensation devolved into uncontrolled excess. Rejecting indulgence, he became obsessed with the mastery of a single, perfect blade stroke. This fixation birthed the creed of the Ecstatic cut: the philosophy of ending all with one calculated motion, angling the blade precisely along the weaknesses inherent in reality itself.
His sword, Nethersaid, is a ritual-broken relic of a forgotten Legion champion, its fractured edge bathed in the never sea of the warp. In battle, his left gauntlet manifests as a bleeding fist, slowing the tempo of time — granting him the stillness required to divide the world.

This unit was an obsession – like much of this Black Legion project. In part, it’s my attempt to create an interesting warband to reave life from the worlds of the 41st millennium. In part, it’s a comfort project – returning to a collection I had as a child. And partly, it’s an attempt to become proficient at 3-d printing. The Vorpal Blades sit snugly in the middle of that Venn diagram.
My aim when choosing these miniatures was to create a dynamic unit, with as much negative space around the mini as possible to mimic Fulgrim’s pose. Iskard is the only static pose, acting as an anchor for the unit.
You may notice one of the minaitures has changed in these photos. I dropped the bloody thing when creating a video overview of the project, and unfortunately could not be recovered. I decided this would be a casualty of the long war and swap the head out to induct a new member to the cult.
